Without flexibility aging baby boomers will have less fun doing any physical activity regardless of the sport. And let’s be honest. An aging baby boomer who lives a pretty sedentary lifestyle might find it difficult engaging in exercise if their body isn’t in better shape. This may mean a lack of aerobic exercise, or a lack of strength. Too often if you don’t keep your body active you loss many important ingredients that the body needs. Losing flexibility is one such ingredient. Losing muscle strength is another.
Improving ones flexibility allows for more range of freedom with the muscles and joints. Stretching is a great way to keep the body flexible. It helps prevent soreness and reduces lower back pain. It’ll improve your coordination and increase blood flow. Bottom line is – it gives you more stamina and energy.
For baby boomers that are active in sports such as tennis or golf, a good stretch would be something you do after your muscles are warm. Identify the muscles you just used and begin there. Try holding static stretches for at least thirty seconds. If you experience muscle areas that seem tighter, then it may be wise to stay with that stretch a bit longer.
