The Search is On for Internet Service Providers in my Area

A relocation might be in my future, and at that time it will be important for me to locate internet service providers in my area for my new service. I am very happy with my current DSL provider, and I would like to simply have service with them. However, I found out that they do not reach every corner of the country, even though they are a very prominent, well-known name in the United States. In fact, what I have heard about the area that we are looking at is that DSL is not necessarily a very mature network, but that cable is a very well developed infrastructure. That is often a typical scenario. Rural areas often don’t have either option available, and the only broadband connection available might be satellite.

For those who have the luxury of choice, it’s a good idea to compare cable and DSL services to see which one makes the most sense for your situation. Although the end result for both delivery modes is a broadband connection, it is not the same as comparing apples to apples. Cable internet is shared bandwidth which tends to be much wider, therefore it has the potential for faster speeds. However, this can be a bit unreliable because the more people sharing the bandwidth at a moment can alter the speed. DSL is dedicated bandwidth, meaning that although the bandwidth is narrower, it is yours alone so the speeds are consistent. Just because DSL is a narrower bandwidth, don’t be fooled. DSL can still boast some pretty significant speeds — 5 to 7 Mbps for some packages. And if you have access to fiber optics, the speeds can reach up to 50 Mbps.
