I recently visited an aunt who lives outside of Austin, TX. If you haven’t been listening to the news you may not know that this area is going through one of the worst droughts since they have started measuring. One of the things that is helping them have water for some of their outdoor pets, including a couple of donkeys, are their rain barrels. Though they haven’t had that much rain, when it does, they capture all they can and use it before they rely on any other kind of water source.
This coupled with conserving where they can have really helped them this year fight against the lack of water. They have also been diligent with their compost bins since the good dirt that comes out of it is rich with minerals and they believe this has helped them keep some of their prized trees and plants alive and well throughout this hard summer. There are things that can be done if we know about them and it is always good to be ready like a Boy Scout!
